Soldier with the Ghent city militia, 14th century

The soldier wears a reinforced iron kettle hat, and the front of a Gothic armour covers his padded gambeson (see photo left). The town’s coat of arms is featured on the hose, as well as on a cape-like cloth worn over the ensemble.

The white fabric under the meta cap protects the head from the cold and the metal.
