Pikeman with the ordnance troops, County of Burgundy, ca. 1475-1480

Pikeman with the ordnance troops, County of Burgundy, ca. 1475-1480

Piekenier, 15de eeuw

The companies created by Charles the Bold comprised one hundred “lances”(themselves commanded by a mounted man-at-arms), an equerry, men with all kinds of (long-stemmed) stabbing weapons, three archers and three men armed with various shooting weapons. These fighters, grouped according to their weaponry, formed a feared military force, because they were disciplined and had excellent artillery.

This pikeman is equipped with chainmail reinforced at the joints with a brigandine, a sallet without visor and a shield bearing the arms of Burgundy.

Round metal plates fixed on the metal helmet protect the ears (see photo left).
