Landsknecht, early 16th century

Landsknecht

The “Landsknechte” (literally: countryside servants) constituted the infantry of the Holy Roman Empire to which our regions belonged. The first regiments appeared during Charles V’s reign. The uniform can be dated 1510-1540, and with its paned sleeves the design and cut were in keeping with current German fashion. The infantryman carries a dagger, a short sabre called Landsknecht sword (Katzbalger in German, or cat-gutting sword) and a relatively short matchlock harquebus.

The headgear was made up of 2 separate parts, including a protective metal cervelliere.

The chainmail can only be seen at collar level (see photo left).

The flower-embellished belt is typical of the period and its geographical location.
