Dragoon, First French Empire, early 19th century

Dragoons probably appeared in the 16th century and were “mounted infantrymen” who travelled on horseback but fought mainly on foot.
In the 18th century the French dragoons wore a signature crested “Roman style” helmet (photo left) and a green jacket. During the First Empire they counted 31 regiments, including one regiment in the Imperial Guard. Their operations in Spain (1808-1812) and during the French campaign (1814) brought them great fame. Many recruits came from the Belgian departments.
The infantryman carries a rifle attached to the saddle, which is useful in combat on foot but shorter than the infantry one, as well as a long straight sword handy on horseback.
Up till 1812 the jacket was fitted with long basques, identical to those fitted on infantry uniforms. The distinctive red of the lapels, facings and turnbacks designates the 2nd regiment.
